Developing a successful defense in the NFL has never been an easy task, and with the increasing emphasis on offense, it has become even more challenging. Unless a team has the ability to draft top-tier players each year, they must get creative to build a successful defense. Unlike offenses, which can choose to specialize in one area and excel, defenses must be adaptable to a wide range of offensive styles and schemes throughout the season.

However, defenses still possess a unique identity. For example, the Vic Fangio defense has a specific way of operating, just as the Bill Belichick defense does. Defensive coordinators must decide what type of defense they want to employ, such as man or zone coverage, blitz or drop into coverage, odd or even front, and so on. After identifying a defensive scheme, the correct players must be acquired and integrated into the system. For instance, a Cover 3 scheme requires a ball-hawking free safety, like Earl Thomas, while a Wide 9 front demands an explosive outside pass rusher, like Nick Bosa. It’s essential that the players fit into the scheme, and vice versa.

Salary

According to contract details, in 2023, Okudah will receive a base salary of $1,010,000 along with a roster bonus of $4,172,074. This will result in a total cap hit of $5,182,074. The contract is fully guaranteed, and a 5th-year option is available.

College

During his freshman year at Ohio State in 2017, Okudah played in all 14 games and managed to make 17 tackles. He continued his performance as a sophomore in 2018, playing in 13 games and making 32 tackles. In his junior year, Okudah made his first career interception against the Miami Redhawks and went on to record 34 tackles, 9 passes defensed, and 3 interceptions. His excellent performance that season earned him a spot on the 2019 College Football All-America Team, and he was also a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award. Okudah chose to enter the 2020 NFL Draft by foregoing his senior year.
