Salary

This is on top of his average annual salary of $300,000 for the duration of his 8-year contract, the highest possible performance bonus of $2.52 million and supplemental compensation of $3 million to $5 million each year.

According to Daniel Kalish, managing partner at HKM Employment Attorneys in Seattle, these are just some of the tempting caveats in Brom’s contract that ranks him the eighth-best of NCAA Division I football head coaches in the nation.

For the past several years, through public records requests, Kalish has collected contracts for the main football college coaches.

In 2002, Brom moved to AF2 where he became the head coach of the Louisville Fire. Brom returned to the University of Louisville in 2003. He spent the next six years as a quarterback coach, passing game coordinator, offensive coordinator and assistant head coach for the Cardinals and helping them win the 2007 Orange Bowl. In 2009, Brom went to Florida Atlantic University, where he was reunited with Schnellenberger as offensive coordinator. Brom went on to coach from 2010 to 2011 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2012, and at Western Kentucky University in 2013 as an associate head coach, offensive coordinator, and quarterback coach. When Petrino returned to Louisville in 2014, Brom was promoted to head coach of the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. As head coach, he led the team to three bowl games, winning two of them. In 2016, Jeff Brom took over as Head Coaching at Purdue University.

Contract

This is on top of his average annual salary of $300,000 for the duration of his 8-year contract, the highest possible performance bonus of $2.52 million and supplemental compensation of $3 million to $5 million each year.

Brom, 50, is part of a top ten list that includes (according to Kalish, starting with the best contract in the nation) Dabo Swinney, Clemson; Nick Saban, Alabama; Steve Sarkeesian, Texas; Lincoln Riley, Oklahoma; Ryan Day, Ohio State; Mel Tucker, Michigan State; Kyle Whittingham, Utah; brom; Brett Belema, Illinois; and Scott Frost, Nebraska.

The only other coach from Indiana to make the 97 list is Ball State’s Mike New, who is ranked with the 92nd best contract in America. Kalish requested a public record request for the contract of Indiana coach Tom Allen, but has yet to receive it.

What happened

The competition will take place on December 30 at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 pm. EST and ESPN will broadcast the matchup.

Jeff Brom is in his fifth season as head coach of Purdue.

Brom played quarterback for head coach Howard Schnellenberger at Louisville from 1989–93. Brom began his collegiate coaching career as a quarterback coach for the Cardinals in Louisville from 2003–06 under head coach Bobby Petrino.

After Petrino’s move to Atlanta in the NFL, Brom joined Schnellenberger’s Florida Atlantic staff as a quarterback coach in 2009.

He will reunite with Paul Petrino in Illinois from 2010–11. Paul Petrino served as wide receivers coach for Illinois offensive coordinator and Brom oversaw quarterback. In Louisville, Paul Petrino served as offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach under his brother, Bobby Petrino.

Another coach from the Petrino coaching tree, Garrick McGee, was appointed as the head coach of UAB in 2012. McGee hired Brom to serve as the Blazers’ offensive coordinator and quarterback coach.

Brom almost didn’t work as UAB’s offensive coordinator in 2012.

McGee initially hired Joe Gilbert as his offensive coordinator, while Brom was slated to oversee the Blazers’ quarterback.
