Jaylon O’Neill Ferguson (December 14, 1995 – June 22, 2022) was an American football outside linebacker and defensive end. He played college football at Louisiana Tech University before being drafted 85th overall by the Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League (NFL) in the 2019 NFL Draft. He played three seasons with the Ravens.

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Jaylon Ferguson has died at the age of 26, the team announced Wednesday. Ferguson was the Ravens’ third-rounder in 2019, becoming a star player for the Louisiana Tech and making his way into the NFL. In three seasons with the Ravens, Ferguson made a total of 67 tackles and 4.5 sacks.

Ferguson was C-USA Defensive Player of the Year in 2018 and earned first-team All-C-USA honors on two separate occasions—setting school and NCAA dismissal records in the process.

After earning MVP honors at the 2018 Hawaii Bowl, the Louisiana native was selected by the Ravens as the 85th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, spent three seasons in Baltimore and involved himself with the city. The Ravens organization issued the following statement after Ferguson’s death.

The Baltimore Ravens died Tuesday night, outside linebacker Jaylon Ferguson, the team announced Wednesday. He was 26 years old.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Jaylon Ferguson,” the team said in a statement. “He was a kind, respectful young man with a big smile and infectious personality. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Jaylon’s family and friends as we mourn a life lost too soon.”

The Ravens did not disclose the details of Ferguson’s death.

Baltimore police responded just before 11:30 p.m. The department said in a statement, for reports of a suspicious death and Ferguson being found “irresponsible, being treated by medics.”

Died

According to the statement, he never regained consciousness and was declared brought dead on the spot.

“There was no sign of trauma or suspicion of any malpractice at this time, but investigators are not ruling out the possibility of an overdose,” police said.

A medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

Ferguson played college football at Louisiana Tech before joining the Ravens.

At Louisiana Tech, Ferguson made 45 sacks, breaking an NCAA record in 2018 and validating his nickname of “Sack Daddy.” His jersey number with the Ravens was 45.
