Jason Zucker was traded by the Minnesota Wild on Monday to the Pittsburgh Penguins for forward Alex Galchenyuk, defenseman Prospect Callen Edison and a first-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft or 2021 NHL Draft. The 28-year-old forward Zucker has 29 points (14 goals, 15 assists) from 45 games this season. He has 243 points (132, 111 assists) in 456 NHL games, all after picking him with the Wilds. Second round of the 2010 NHL Draft (No. 59).

“He’s the top six player who skates really well,” said Pittsburgh general manager Jim Rutherford. “Should fit in our style. He has a good shot and can move the puck well. A really good all-rounder. So not only is he a good fit for us now, especially (forward) Jake Guenzel with but we then take him for three more years. That gives us a nice 1-2 punch to the left.

Injury

Less than 10 days after helping Jason Zucker out of the ice in Minnesota, the penguin winger found himself back in the fight… quite literally.

During Saturday’s 6-3 loss to the Washington Capitals, Zucker took off the gloves in the third round with Trevor van Riemsdyk. The contest itself was relatively uneventful. It was more a wrestling match than a bare-knuckle brawl.

Nonetheless, the fact that Zucker soon returned was a significant development for the Penguins team that lost seven out of nine games.

Zucker said the biggest positive of the current situation is getting to spend time with his family — although Hendrix, 2, and Stella, who turned a year older last week, have turned out to be quite a handful.

“The two young men are crazy,” said Zucker, laughing. “They’re just running around the house and having a good time. We’re just following them and trying to get some rest.”

At first, Jason and Carly thought they would have this extra time to work on a list of projects around the house that included cleaning out their storage room, cleaning out the basement, and hanging up the TV and photos. “We’re like, we’ll have 12 extra hours in a day!” Jason said. “But none of it is accomplished. None of it (laughs).”

After waking up early with Hendrix and Stella and running with them, by the time the kids are ready for an afternoon nap, Jason and Carly are also ready for one.
