A Boston Red Sox outfielder has been suspended for two games after being caught yelling a “horrible” anti-gay slur at a fan during the team’s Sunday loss against the Houston Astros.
Jarren Duran, one of the Red Sox’s top hitters, was caught by a live mic near home plate telling a heckler to “shut up the f—ing f—t.” During the sixth inning of the game. The fan was heard telling Duran, who had suffered two strikeouts by that point in the game, that he needed a “tennis racket”.
Duran’s unpaid suspension was announced Monday by the Red Sox and Major League Baseball. The team said his salary during the suspension will be donated to the LGBTQ advocacy and outreach organization PFLAG.

Major League Baseball and the Red Sox suspended Boston outfielder Jarren Duran for two games on Monday after he yelled a homophobic slur at a fan during the broadcast of Sunday’s game against the Houston Astros.
The unpaid suspension begins immediately, ruling Duran out of Monday night’s game at Fenway Park against the Texas Rangers. Duran’s prorated pay for the suspended playing days is being donated to PFLAG (Federation of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays), MLB and the team said in a joint statement.
Duran made the comments Sunday night as he batted in the bottom of the sixth inning at Fenway. Video from the NESN telecast captured a fan harassing Duran by telling him he would need a tennis racket to connect with the pitch. Duran responded by calling the man a curse.
After the game, which Boston lost 10–2, Durán issued a statement apologizing for his reaction, calling the words he used “really horrible” and saying he wanted to learn from the incident.
