Jared McCain Injury Update: UCL Tear Sidelines 76ers Guard Ahead of 2025-26 Season
Philadelphia 76ers guard Jared McCain has suffered a significant setback just weeks before the 2025-26 NBA season. The 21-year-old, who was expected to play a pivotal role in the team’s backcourt, sustained a torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right thumb during a workout on Thursday, September 25, 2025. This injury casts doubt on his availability for the season opener against the Boston Celtics on October 22.
What Is a UCL Tear?
The ulnar collateral ligament is a critical stabilizer of the thumb joint, especially for athletes who rely heavily on grip strength. A tear can range from mild to severe, with recovery times varying accordingly. In McCain’s case, initial reports suggest that if the tear is partial, he could be sidelined for 5 to 7 weeks. However, a complete tear may necessitate surgery, potentially extending his absence to 10 to 12 weeks.
McCain’s Promising Rookie Season
McCain was drafted 16th overall by the 76ers in the 2024 NBA Draft out of Duke University. Despite playing only 23 games due to a meniscus tear in his left knee, he made a significant impact, averaging 15.3 points, 2.6 assists, and 2.4 rebounds per game. His shooting splits were impressive: 46% from the field, 38.3% from three-point range, and 87.5% from the free-throw line. In November 2024, he was named Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month, becoming the first 76ers player since Ben Simmons in 2018 to earn the honor.
Impact on the 76ers
The timing of McCain’s injury is particularly concerning for the 76ers, who are already dealing with other injury issues. Star center Joel Embiid underwent left knee surgery in the spring and hasn’t played since February. All-Star wing Paul George also had knee surgery in July and is expected to be reevaluated during training camp.
With McCain’s status uncertain, the 76ers may need to adjust their backcourt rotation. Rookie VJ Edgecombe, the third overall pick in the 2025 draft from Baylor, could see increased playing time. Additionally, restricted free agent Quentin Grimes, who has yet to sign with the team, might be called upon to fill the void.
Looking Ahead
As the 76ers prepare for the upcoming season, McCain’s injury adds to the team’s list of uncertainties. The organization is consulting with specialists to determine the best course of action for his recovery. The team’s medical staff will closely monitor his progress to assess when he can safely return to the court.
For McCain, this injury represents another challenge in his young career. However, if his previous recovery from the meniscus tear is any indication, he has the resilience to overcome this setback as well. The 76ers and their fans will be hoping for a swift and full recovery, allowing McCain to contribute to the team’s success in the near future.
