Transformation

Jared Cannonier was living in Anchorage, Alaska and performing maintenance on air traffic control equipment for the Federal Aviation Administration. It was 2009, he was nearly a year removed from serving in the US military and his wife, Kat, was pregnant with their first child.

The Cannonier weighed over 300 pounds.

“When we were in Alaska, we were cold and like to eat for comfort,” Kat recalled, “so that’s when we got really heavy.”

Fast-forward 10 years, and Cannoneer is celebrating his second-round TKO of Jack Hermanson, who was ESPN’s No. 6-ranked middleweight. A win should propel Cannonier to the top level of the division – and this opportunity to headline the UFC card is the culmination of years of hard work and transformation of his body.

Few would have guessed that the 300-pound air traffic control mechanic would one day have a chance to prove himself as one of the best 185-pound MMA fighters on the planet.

Domestic abuse

Derek Brunson caused a stir in the MMA community with the shirt he wore during his UFC 271 Media Day appearance. He was wearing a shirt which read ‘I beat up domestic abusers’ printed on the front.

Brunson is expected to face Jared Cannonnier in a three-round match at UFC 271 on February 12. The winner of the fight could get a shot at the UFC middleweight title later this year. While questioning about their fight at the UFC 271 Media Day event, the UFC 185-pound contender was asked about the shirt.

Takedown defense

Jarrod Cannonnier made his UFC debut against Shawn Jordan at UFC 182. Cannonier dropped out in the bout and lost via KO (punch) in the first round.

Jarrod came back from a loss and won his next 2 fights before the match against Glover Teixeira at UFC 208.

Teixeira used his seasoned experience to hand Cannonier in his second loss. Cannonier won his next match at UFC: The Ultimate Fighter 26 against Nick Roerich. His career then went into recession as he lost successively to Jan Blakowicz and Dominic Reyes.

Jared returned to the winning column and went on a 3-fight winning streak in which he defeated David Branch, Anderson Silva and Jack Hermanson. Cannonnier next challenged Robert Whitaker and lost by unanimous decision.

Cannonier fought Calvin Gastelum at the UFC on ESPN: 29 and put on a solid performance to win the bout via unanimous decision.
