According to The Sports Daily, as of August 2021, Cannonier has an estimated UFC career earnings of $973,000. ‘The Killa Gorilla’ earned a whopping $159,000 in 2018 for his fight against David Branch. His biggest salary ($195,000) came from his fight against Hermanson in 2019.
Before and after
Jared Cannonier was living in Anchorage, Alaska and performing maintenance on air traffic control equipment for the Federal Aviation Administration. It was 2009, he was nearly a year removed from serving in the US military and his wife, Kat, was pregnant with their first child.
The Cannonier weighed over 300 pounds.
“When we were in Alaska, we were cold and like to eat for comfort,” Kat recalled, “so that’s when we got really heavy.”
Fast-forward 10 years, and Cannoneer is celebrating his second-round TKO of Jack Hermanson, who was ESPN’s No. 6-ranked middleweight. A win should propel Cannonier to the top level of the division – and this opportunity to headline the UFC card is the culmination of years of hard work and transformation of his body.
Few would have guessed that the 300-pound air traffic control mechanic would one day have a chance to prove himself as one of the best 185-pound MMA fighters on the planet.
“When Jared and I first got together, he really wasn’t that big,” said Kat, who has been married to Cannoneer for 12 years. “We were small, not kids, he was in shape. He was about 225 pounds and he had these huge, sized arms.”
Cannonier’s first foray into the world of mixed martial arts was through the Army’s Combat Training Course. He was discharged from the military after serving three years because of a positive drug test for marijuana.
At heavyweight
Jared “The Killa Ape” Cannonnier will face former Interim Middleweight Champion Calvin Gastelum in the main event of UFC Fight Night: Cannonnier vs. Gastelum. Cannonnier is the number three middleweight and it’s hard to believe this man was once a heavyweight.
Cannonier began his career as a heavyweight, defeating Sean Jordan in a heavyweight event at UFC 182 in his first fight with the UFC, a victory that was followed by a knockout victory over Cyril Asker in the heavyweight division.
Although he was working in the division, Cannonier always knew he was not a natural heavyweight, “I already knew when I was at heavyweight that I was no more a natural heavyweight than the other guys I competed against.” doing it,” Cannier said. “I’m a realist. I’m not living in a fantasy. I know what. It was only a matter of time. I knew I had to do it.”
