Rumor
Bradberry signed a three-year, $43.5 million contract with the Giants in 2020 after four years with the Carolina Panthers. He made the Pro Bowl in his first season with New York.
The Giants are undergoing a rebuild under a new regime with general manager Joe Schon and head coach Brian Dabol.
One of Shoen’s jobs has been to bring the team under the salary cap. Prior to Bradberry’s release, the Giants had minus-$7.2 million in effective cap space for Over the Cap, so they had to take drastic measures to exit the raid.
PFF
Last season, Bradberry recorded 54 tackles, two force fumbles, 18 passes defended (third in the NFL) and three interceptions. In addition to total tackle dropping, with his shadow-like coverage obstructing his path, Bradberry recorded career highs in all these stats. This made him the seventh-best cornerback in the league with a PFF grade of 79.8.
The former Carolina Panthers also posted the league’s seventh-best coverage grade from cornerback with a grade of 79.9. They only allowed a passer rating of 70.1 when targeted.
Bradberry will look to improve upon his impressive 2020 campaign in 2021 with the help of a reloaded Giants defense. Notable returning teammate Joe Bradberry has star safety tandem (Jabril Peppers and Logan Ryan), his third substitute (Javier McKinney), inside linebacker Blake Martinez as captain and breakout pass rusher Leonard Williams.
Trade
The New York Giants released cornerback James Bradberry on Monday to save about $10.1 million against the salary cap this season.
New general manager Joe Schon was already looking to trade Bradberry out of free agency in March, but found nothing that worked for all parties involved. Schoen admitted last week he was surprised there wasn’t much interest in the team’s No. 1 cornerback.
“Yeah, I was,” he said Wednesday on WFAN Sports Radio. “I thought there would be more interest. There were some teams that showed interest pre-draft, and we had a few different times, compensation in place and the contract never worked out. Due to the fact that we Had a good conversation The other teams and their agents had a good conversation with the teams, sometimes if you’re going to renegotiate a contract and can’t come to an agreement, that’s it.”
The move for the Giants was more about the money than the indictment of the player. Bradberry, 28, was set to earn $13.5 million this season and would have counted as $21.9 million on the team’s salary cap. His release left the Giants thin in the corner, where the frequently injured Adori Jackson is the only veteran with significant starting experience.
College
Defensive coordinator Sean McDermott held a contest during training camp to name a new starting corner after the Panthers released Josh Norman. Bradberry competed against Robert McClain for the job. [6] Head coach Ron Rivera named Bradberry the starting cornerback, along with veteran Ben Benvire, to begin the regular season. [7]
He made his professional regular season debut and career in the season-opener of the Carolina Panthers at the Denver Broncos, making six combined tackles and one pass deflection in a 21–20 loss. During the first campaign of the game, C.J. Made his first career tackle to pass Anderson back. [8] On September 18, 2016, Bradberry made two combined tackles, two pass deflections, and made his first career interception by quarterback Blaine Gabert in the Panthers’ 46–27 win against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 2. [9] On October 2, 2016, he made two singles tackles before pulling out of the Panthers’ 48–33 defeat in the second quarter with an injury to the Atlanta Falcons. Ben Benviquere and fellow rookie Daryl Varley, who replaced Bradberry, gave up more than 300 receiving yards to Julio Jones. On October 7, 2016, the Carolina Panthers released their No. 1 cornerback, Bene Benvire, in response to an embarrassing second performance at the Falcons. His release made Bradberry the team’s No. 1 cornerback on their Depths chart, with fellow rookie Daryl Varley at No. 2 as their starting cornerback and Zack Sanchez at No. 3 as their backup. [10] [11] Bradberry was inactive for the next three games (Weeks 5–8) due to a serious turf toe condition during his loss to the Falcons. In Week 13, Bradberry collected a season-high eight combined tackles and broke a pass during a 40–7 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. On January 1, 2017, Bradberry made six singles tackles, made two pass deflections, and blocked Jameis Winston during a 17–16 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. [13] He finished his rookie season with 59 combined tackles (4.)
