Jameis Winston is set to hit free agency in March. That doesn’t mean New Orleans isn’t prioritizing a possible reunion with Winston. If the team doesn’t start talks with the veteran QB, it will be too soon, according to NFL Media’s Jim Trotter, who reported Friday that Winston will remain one of their top choices under the center.

“They’re going to explore every option as it pertains to that position, which means drafts, trades, and free agency,” Trotter said on NFL Network. “(But) if they go the free agency route, the quarterback that makes the most sense is Jamis Winston. He’s been in the system for two years. They’ve taken the time to develop him, his with Pete Carmichael. Ek Rishta Hai, who will call the plays… My understanding is that, if they haven’t already opened contract talks with them, they will very soon.”

Winston (JAY-mis; born January 6, 1994) is an American football quarterback for the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Florida State, where he became the youngest player to win the Heisman Trophy and led his team to the 2014 BCS National Championship game during his freshman year. Declaring for the NFL after his second season, Winston was selected first overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Jameis Winston admitted to a possible NCAA violation — albeit minor — by stating during an ESPN interview that he got free food from a Tallahassee grocery store.

The former FSU quarterback made headlines in April 2014 when he was cited for stealing about $32 in crab legs and crawfish from the public. But during an ESPN Draft Academy segment that aired Tuesday night, Winston said he didn’t steal anything from the supermarket, after a store employee offered him free food.

Winston attempted only 11 regular-season passes for the Saints last season, though he threw a touchdown in New Orleans’ divisional round loss to the Buccaneers. He played with Tampa for the first five years of his career, throwing 121 touchdowns and 88 interceptions in 70 starts. Winston led the NFL in passing yards and interceptions in 2019, his last season with the Bucs.
