Denver Nuggets star point guard Jamal Murray is being criticized after he was seen throwing a heat pack on the court during the defending champions’ 106-80 playoff loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday.

While on the bench at the end of the second quarter, Murray could be seen throwing a heat pack while the Timberwolves were on offense. The object fell near the basket with several players surrounding the heat pack.

Murray has been fined $100,000 for “throwing multiple objects in the direction of a game official” during the playoffs, the NBA said in a statement Tuesday.

Fine

The NBA fined Denver Nuggets guard Jamal Murray $100,000 for tossing a heat pack and towel onto the court during Monday night’s playoff game against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The NBA announced the fine on Tuesday. Murray will not be suspended.

Murray threw a heat pack onto the court with 4:45 remaining in the first half of Minnesota’s 106–80 win in Denver. TNT video recorded the incident when Denver trailed 37–20.

Murray threw a heat pack from the bench onto the court when Minnesota was in an offensive set. Timberwolves forward Karl-Anthony Towns grabbed a rebound and hit a layup to extend Minnesota’s lead with the Heat Pack on the floor.

Denver’s Kentavious Caldwell-Pope was on the court on defense. He saw the pack on the floor, picked it up and threw it to the side.

Contract

Jamal Murray signed a 4-year, $14,510,706 contract with the Denver Nuggets, including $14,510,706 guaranteed and an average annual salary of $3,627,677.

Annual salary

The Nuggets point guard will earn a salary of $33,833,400 for the 2023-24 season.

In his third NBA season, Jamal Murray impressed the Nuggets so much that he was offered a 5-year, maximum $170 million extension.

Murray responded with a breakout year in the 2019 season, averaging 18.2 points and 4.8 assists, and played a key role in helping the Nuggets clinch the third seed in the West. What followed was a spectacular 2019–20 playoff run where the term “Bubble Murray” was born. He made two surprising 3–1 comebacks and led the Nuggets to the conference finals, where they lost to the eventual champions, the LA Lakers.

Throw

Murray’s behavior was described as “inexcusable” and “dangerous” by Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch following the conclusion of the game.

Finch told reporters after the game that he did not witness the incident but that he had been briefed on it before speaking to officials.

“We tried to impress upon [the officials] that there probably weren’t a lot of fans in the building that had heat packs, so maybe it had to come from the bench, which seemed logical to them,” Finch said.

The Timberwolves head coach said he was sure it was simply a refereeing error, but said actions like Murray’s should not be allowed to happen.
