Trade
The Rays and Mariners have become well-acquainted for the two clubs located more than 3,000 miles apart. Since Jerry Dipoto became Seattle’s general manager in September 2015, the two sides have traded each other eight times, including Thursday’s five-player deal, which included outfielder Malex Smith and minor league outfielder Jake Fraley. Pacific Northwest and catcher Mike Zunino, outfielder Guillermo Heredia and minor league left-hander Michael Plasmeier left for Sunshine State.
Injury
Ryan Divish revealed that James Paxton hasn’t felt the same pain as his injury since 2020, so he hopes it’s just discomfort and nothing more. Big Maple is due to get an MRI sometime today.
Jake Fraley’s patience at the plate has had a good start to 2021 and is competing for the starting left field position. Now, it looks like Taylor Trammell is left-field to lose once Kyle Lewis returns. Jake made a brilliant diving catch to rob Yoan Moncada of a hit to end the fifth inning but got up with some pain. The LSU product also has a history of injuries so his hamstring injury is of great concern.
Draft
The Tampa Bay Rays selected Fraley as the 77th overall pick of the 2016 MLB Draft. He spent the 2016 season with the Hudson Valley Renegades, where he batted .238 in 55 games with one home run, 18 RBIs and 33 stolen bases.
Scouting Report
Obviously we’d expect a regression as he moves on, but hopefully he can make it back in. Adding to that thought is this Scouting Report, courtesy of Baseball America (before the season):
He’s had 18 doubles and 5 triple pairs, and while he’s never shown this type of power, it appears he’s figured something out.
Since promotion they have seen their strikeouts increase by 23.1%, courtesy of 11.2% SwStr%. This is a small sample size, although they posted 9.6% SwStr% on Double-A (21.2% strike rate), so it’s not unreasonable either.
Salary
The Salary of Jake Fraley is $572,100. Fraley has not done much with his major league chances, posting a .152/.200/.227 slash line and registering 35.7 K% in 70 plate appearances.
