Lions OC Ben Johnson said the team could use RB Jahmir Gibbs “in some ways that people don’t think we can do.” Gibbs is currently sharing the backfield with RB David Montgomery, but it looks like the Lions have set a plan for the rookie. Gibbs is willing to utilize early-downs and red zone play on top of a potential pass-catching role, which gives him a chance to thrive early on. The first-round pick from Alabama is likely to play a big role as part of a Lions attack that is expected to be more explosive for fantasy owners this upcoming season.

Draft
Jahmir Gibbs is an explosive play waiting to happen.
Gibbs’ skill set focuses on his high-level movement skills in the open field. Gibbs shows terrific explosion on the perimeter and at the second level. He has a lethal one-cut ability to make defenders miss, a trait only improved by his open field vision and subtle movements to set up defenders for failure. Gibbs also has smooth hips and quick feet, another skill that allows him to easily maneuver through waves of defenders at the second level or outside the tackle.
Once he gains the runway, Gibbs is difficult to catch. He picks up his top speed in the blink of an eye and has the extra gear to run right past the rest of the defense on his way to the end zone. Few other running backs in this class can match his ability to destroy tackling angles and turn routine runs into short plays.
Gibbs is also a capable third-down back. He could still stand to improve his discipline in pass protection, but he also has a good baseline as well as the strength and willingness to slow down most blitz threats. As a pass-catcher, Gibbs doesn’t have the most consistent hands, but if he gets the ball in the short area, especially outside the perimeter, he’s a weapon. That would be an effective checkdown option.

There are some high school players who are so productive that they enter college with an already established reputation. Gibbs is one such player. During his time at Dalton High School in Georgia, Gibbs accumulated an impressive 4,882 yards and 70 touchdowns. In his senior year alone, he gained 2,554 yards and scored 40 touchdowns. Gibbs totaled 420 yards and eight touchdowns in one game before sitting out in the fourth quarter.
It’s safe to say that Gibbs dominated competition at his high school in Georgia. His impressive performance earned him a spot in the top 100 of the 2019 recruiting class. As a four-star recruit, Gibbs had offers from several schools, but ultimately chose to sign with his local team, Georgia Tech.
Since then, Gibbs has become synonymous with Georgia Tech football. During two seasons with the Yellow Jackets, Gibbs passed for 1,974 yards from scrimmage and scored 13 total touchdowns. During his sophomore year in 2021, he recorded 746 yards and four touchdowns on 143 carries, while also adding 35 catches for 465 yards and two touchdowns through the air.
Contract
According to the Detroit Free Press, Gibbs’ four-year deal is worth $17.845 million, of which $9.978 million is guaranteed. With Gibbs and Will Anderson Jr. both now signed to their rookie deals, Bryce Young and the Panthers are the last addition Tide fans have been waiting for.
In his lone season with the Tide, Gibbs started all 12 games in which he appeared and had 151 carries for 926 yards and seven touchdowns. However, he was an even greater asset in the receiving game as he led the Tide in receptions with 44 that went for 444 yards and three scores. Jahmyr Gibbs fantasy.
