NBA Draft projection

When you search for “2022 NBA mock draft,” no matter which article you click on, you’ll find the star trio of Gonzaga’s Chet Holmgren, Duke’s Paolo Banchero and Auburn’s Jabari Smith Jr. among the first three picks. Will be found in any order.

To be clear: In my most recent mock draft, I also placed three freshmen on top of the draft board in that order.

All three prospects are unique in their own right as proficient big men, but in today’s girth-oriented NBA, why not put more thought into the draft with the best girth player in the head and shoulders to break into the top three? Used to be?

Purdue sophomore Jaden Ivey was electrifying all season, leading boilermakers to Sweet 16. At 6-foot-4, 195 pounds with a 6-foot-9 wingspan, he has all the physical tools to succeed at the next level.

That doesn’t mean that Ivy is any kind of diamond in the rough—she’s almost unanimously estimated to be the fourth player off the board behind those big three players—but it doesn’t look like she’s considered in that top tier, and He should be.

Jaden Ivey was ruled out of the Pistons’ Summer League matchup against the Wizards on Saturday with an ankle injury.

Ivey was attempting a 3-pointer just five minutes into the game when he landed on Isaiah Todd’s foot. Todd was called for a Flagrant 1 foul and Ivey made all three of his free throw attempts before leaving the game.

Ahead of the 2022 NBA Draft, many people compared Purdue’s Jaden Ivey to Grizzlies superstar Jaa Morant, and the comparisons made some sense.

Both boast top-tier athleticism and have the power to explode on the rim. However, Morant headed to college basketball with an assist before being selected by Memphis. But on the other hand, my primary concern about Ivey was his willingness to be a passerby.

Other recent lotteries have picked his height (or less) with a collegiate assist rate similar to Ivey, not usually translated as high-level distributors after playing in the NBA. This is not a knock on Ivey, as it is a feature of his playing style. He has a scores-first mentality, which makes him more of a two-guard than a floor general.

According to Synergy, Ivey was one of 21 drafted players who completed at least 50 passes from pick and roll last season. Of those players, only Jaden Hardy (27.4 percent) and Benedict Mathurin (33.7 percent) tried to pass rather than score less than Ivey (34.2 percent) last season.

Dunk highlights

Jaden Ivey and the Purdue Boilermakers have been one of the best teams in NCAA men’s basketball. With the arrival of March Madness, Purdue ranks No. 4 in the country and leads the Big Ten, while their talented sophistication finds its groove.

After going up against a tough Rutgers team on Sunday, Ivey finished with 25 points despite struggling off the field.

Purdue (24-4, 13-4) is ahead in a tight Big Ten race, just a half-game ahead of No. 13 Wisconsin and No. 15 Illinois. Ivey has been one of the stars of college basketball, and he’s starting to attract the attention of NBA scouts as a potential top-five pick in the 2022 draft.
