Hopper is currently contracted at GWS until the end of the 2023 season and will need to be traded this off-season in order to eliminate the CAT.

Melbourne’s Tom Brown has revealed that Trent Cochin and Jack Riewoldt are expected to re-sign contracts worth up to $300,000, up from their current deals.

Shane Edwards’ retirement after last weekend’s final loss to Brisbane will free up nearly $500,000.

Hopper was widely tipped to move to Geelong, but Brown told the Tigers that the 25-year-old is “still really considering”. He reportedly met with Richmond on Monday.

Taranto, who is out of contract, and Hopper could take a combined $1.5 million per year in Richmond’s cap, while the latter’s trade could cost him two first-round draft picks.

Brown reports Cochin has agreed a one-year extension that could be announced in the coming days.

“Jack Rivold, like Cochin, is an offer that would be on less money,” he said on Triple M.

Hooper was born in New South Wales and grew up in the small Riverina town of Leighton. He began playing football at the age of four with the Leighton-Whitton Crows, where his father coached. He joined Greater Western Sydney’s academy program at the age of 13 and was regularly selected for NSW representative teams in later years. He attended school at St. Francis de Sales Regional College. At the age of 17, he began boarding at St Patrick’s College, Ballarat while playing TAC Cup football for the North Ballarat Rebels.

He was recruited by the Greater Western Sydney Giants with the seventh overall selection in the 2015 national draft.

Injury 2022

Colon Ward and Lachey Whitfield are on their way back for the Giants’ Sunday afternoon date with North Melbourne as Jacob Hopper also closes to finally playing again.

The Kangaroos clash begins in the second half of the season in Greater Western Sydney, entering a mid-season bye with a disappointing 3–8 record and a new coach, Mark McVeigh.

Ward is in the final stages of the AFL’s concussion protocol after losing to Brisbane of Greater Western Sydney before a mid-season bye.

The 32-year-old midfielder will become the first giant to play 200 games for the club if he is fit, while Whitfield missed the last two games with an ankle problem but is expected to fully train on Friday.

There is still some uncertainty about Tim Taranto’s back problem, which will keep him out for the third game but potentially no more.
