The number 42 is the only number officially retired in Major League Baseball and is forever synonymous with Jackie Robinson. Today it is found on the back of every MLB player’s jersey.

Friday marks 75 years since Robinson became the first black player to play in Major League Baseball.

Despite the overwhelming response to his signing at the Brooklyn Dodgers, Robinson made an immediate impact on the field. He became an MVP and added a World Series ring to his many accolades, but it was his push for social change that made him great.

Robinson’s son David said that his father quickly became a fierce defender of Black America.

“We loved the struggle. We loved being able to fight against oppression. We had to do that and I hope our younger generation can adopt that attitude,” David told CBS News special correspondent James Brown.

David Robinson says he would be proud of the progress his father has made.

“In 1947 we saw our weaknesses, our failures, our folly to be inferior or incapable of contributing to any aspect, any element, of society, and I think that the strength that emanated from that success. Will be talking about using,” David said.

The story of Jackie Robinson is something that Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts knows personally – his father was the first black student to attend their all-white school.

He gathers around the Robinson statue at Dodger Stadium to remind his team and local high school athletes of the sacrifices they made.
