Jackie Robinson, one of the most important and influential athletes in history, would have turned 99 on Wednesday.
Robinson became the fifth son born to Jerry and Malia Robinson on January 31, 1919, before breaking Major League Baseball’s color barrier in 1947 with the Brooklyn Dodgers.

MLB offered one of Robinson’s most famous quotes that have come to define his legacy as an athlete and individual.
Prior to playing professional baseball, Robinson was a four-sport athlete at UCLA in baseball, basketball, football, and track and field. He received varsity papers in each sport and won the long jump national championship in 1940.
Robinson became the first athlete to retire his jersey in an entire sport in 1997. New York Yankees close Mariano Rivera, who made his MLB debut in 1995, was the last player to wear the number 42 until his retirement in 2013.
April 15 is “Jackie Robinson Day” in MLB every year. Players, managers, coaches and umpires all wear the number 42 to celebrate the anniversary of the day they broke the color barrier of the game.

Nike is also remembering Robinson’s historic moment. The sports apparel giant announced that they will be releasing Jackie Robinson Dunk Loose to help celebrate the special occasion. She will be released on April 15 – Jackie Robinson Day.
