Jack Eichel (born October 28, 1996) is an American professional ice hockey center for the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League (NHL). Eichel was selected second overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft by the Buffalo Sabres. Before entering the league, Eichel was described at the age of 17 as “the new face of American hockey,” and he is considered a member of a rising class of generational talents in the sport, along with fellow 2015 draftee Connor McDavid. Eichel was the recipient of the 2015 Hobey Baker Award, given to the top National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s ice hockey player. He was the second freshman to win the award and the first since Paul Kariya who won it first in 1993.
Cocaine
The NHL acknowledges there are more players using cocaine. The NHL has begun talking with the NHL Players Association to add cocaine and other drugs to the banned substances list.
Players are only tested twice a year under the current terms of the NHL’s drug-testing program for performance enhancing steroids and other drugs. Under the labour agreement, the league is only allowed to test 60 players during the offseason. One-third of 2,400 player urine samples are collected and screened more closely for drug abuse, like cocaine.
Surgery
Jack Eichel is no longer the captain of the Buffalo Sabres and requires surgery to repair a herniated disk in his neck, general manager Kevyn Adams said Thursday at training camp. “I feel the captain is the heartbeat of your team,” Adams said. “I felt that we needed to address that.”
Eichel, who hasn’t played since March due to a herniated disk, will start the season on injured reserve. The forward and the team have been at odds over the treatment of the injury. Eichel will not accept the Sabres’ desire for fusion surgery while the team has denied him the artificial disk replacement procedure he wants.

Highlights
Eichel grew up in North Chelmsford, Massachusetts. He played for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program team during the 2012–13 and 2013–14 seasons, and was recognized for his outstanding play during the 2013–14 season when he was named to the United States Hockey League Second All-Star Team. After his second season within the Development Program, Eichel signed a letter of intent to commit to Boston University of the Hockey East on April 29, 2014.

Buffalo Sabres center Jack Eichel failed his pre-training camp physical and was placed on injured reserve, leaving the two sides no closer to a resolution over how to treat a herniated disk which has sidelined the player for six months.
General manager Kevyn Adams said the player has also been stripped of his captaincy as the Sabres opened camp Thursday. The developments leave Eichel being out for the foreseeable future, with the growing likelihood the face of the franchise has already played his final game with the team which selected him with the No. 2 pick in the 2015 draft.
