The comment went viral, with Del Rio later says and  issuing an apology, saying his terminology was “irresponsible and reckless”.

In a tweet on Monday, the 59-year-old questioned why the 2020 riots following the killing of George Floyd were not being investigated with the same enthusiasm as the January 2021 attack on the Capitol.

Del Rio was asked about the tweet during a press conference on Wednesday.

Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera has fined defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio $100,000 for playing down the attack on the Capitals as a “dust-up.”

“Words have consequences and his words have hurt many in our community,” Rivera wrote in a statement. “I want to make it clear that our organization will not tolerate any parallels between the actions of those demanding justice in the wake of the killing of George Floyd and those seeking to topple our government on 6 January.”

Who is

Jack Louis Del Rio Jr. was born in Castro Valley, California to a father of Spanish descent and an Italian-American mother. He attended Hayward High School in Hayward, California, where he became a notable three-sport athlete. who earned all-state honors in football, baseball, and basketball.

In football, Del Rio helped his team win the North Coast Section 2A Championship. In baseball, although he was the starting catcher, Jack was used as a pitcher in one game and scored 16 runs in a playoff game against Mission San Jose-Fremont. Jack and future Seattle Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu were teammates in baseball and football.
