Two of the world’s lightest fighters will collide today in a main event early next year as Benil Daryush and Islam Makhachev are expected to headline the UFC Fight Night event on February 26.

That’s according to a recent report from ESPN’s Brett Okamoto. The lightweight bout will be fought over five rounds and will serve as the main event for the upcoming UFC Fight Night card this February. No other details have been shared at this time.

Dariush, 32, has been quietly destroying the competition at 155 pounds since being upset by Alexander Hernandez in 2018. The veteran contender has now won his last seven trips to the Octagon, including recent victories over Tony Ferguson, Carlos Diego Ferreira and Scott. Holtzman. Daryush has never looked better and is battling to thwart some of Makhachev’s wrestling attacks. It’s an interesting matchup to say the least and could launch Daaris into a title shot if he delivers a decisive performance.

Next fight

It seems quite possible that Islam Makachev will be linked with the loser of the UFC 269 main event. His win at UFC 267 against Dan Hooker was his first win against an opponent in the top 10. A fight against a fellow top-five contender seems like the logical next step.

The winner of Poirier vs. Oliveira is likely to face the winner of Justin Gaethje vs. Michael Chandler at UFC 268 this upcoming weekend.

Other alternatives to Islam Makhachev
Due to the volatile nature of MMA, nothing is set in stone. With that in mind, Islam Makhachev has other options worth considering, if not a clash with the loser of Poirier vs. Oliveira.
