Since its inception at the United Nations General Assembly in 2014, International Day of Yoga has been celebrated every year on 21 June since 2015. Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India. Indian The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, in his UN address in 2014, suggested the date of June 21, as it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and holds a special significance in many parts of the world.

When is

Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India. The word ‘yoga’ is derived from Sanskrit and means to join or join, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness.

Today it is practiced around the world in various forms and is steadily increasing in popularity.

Recognizing its universal appeal, on 11 December 2014, the United Nations declared 21 June as the International Day of Yoga by resolution 69/131.

International Yoga Day aims to raise awareness around the world about the many benefits of practicing yoga.

The draft proposal for the establishment of International Day of Yoga was proposed by India and supported by a record 175 member states. The proposal was first introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address at the inauguration of the 69th session of the General Assembly, in which he said: “Yoga is an invaluable gift from our ancient tradition. Yoga embodies the unity of mind and body, thought and action… a holistic approach [which] is valuable to our health and our well-being. Yoga is not just about exercise; It is a way of discovering a sense of oneness with oneself, with the world and with nature.”

Events

The Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations presents the “World of Yoga” exhibition at the entrance of the UN representatives from 21 June – 1 July 2022. The digital exhibition offers a glimpse into the annual celebrations of the day and presents a standardized set of yoga poses. The practice, referred to as the ‘Common Yoga Protocol’, is a good starting point for beginners looking to become involved in the highly rewarding world of yoga.
