Pato O’Ward made the opening run, at a time when the wind was steady, the ambient temperature was 77degF, and the track temperature was 86. Mexican ace’s Arrow McLaren SP-Chevrolet delivered an average of 233.037mph, but this was eclipsed by the next runner, Rinus VK. The Ed Carpenter Racing-Chevy driver, who started in fourth and third for his first two Indy 500s, gave an opening lap of 234.702, and although his fourth lap dropped to 232.655mph, he averaged 233.655. It was the third fastest qualifying run in Indy 500 history.

VeeKay and O’Ward both survived Felix Rosenquist’s run, as the Swede’s car hit a hard-limiter (12,000rpm) straight into the front on his third lap, affecting his pace. Romain Grosjean was the first Honda driver to hit the track, and he was the first to change gears between fifth and sixth, and delivered an average of 232.201mph.

An even higher profile Indy 500 rookie went ahead, namely Chip Ganassi Racing-Honda’s Jimmy Johnson. The NASCAR legend scored 233.165 on his opener, but on lap 2 he went worryingly high at the exit from Turn 2. But he put his foot in it and gave an average of 232.398.

Takuma Sato’s Del Coin Racing-Honda with RWR, who did the fastest laps in race trim on Tuesday and Thursday (assisted by a tow) and in qualifying trim/turbo boost on Fast Friday, had an unexpected run, averaging 232.196. mph, and his peak lap came unusually on lap 2.

After a fast Friday filled with less than 500 combined laps driven by a 33-car field due to high temperatures and even high wind gusts, the Arrow McLaren SP not only became one of the fastest laps in the field ( Pato O’Ward, third fastest at 231.798 mph), but he clearly won the ‘luck’ fight afterwards. The driver, or a representative of his choice, came onto a stage at Pagoda Plaza and blindly chose his spot to make his first qualifying run on Saturday – and he did so on Friday in the order of his last spot on the time chart.

O’Ward quickly took the top spot, and his teammates Felix Rosenquist (4th) and Juan Pablo Montoya (ninth) would not only be able to run close to him and try to learn a thing or two about the conditions, but will do so. As soon as possible, with as low a temperature as possible.

Arrow McLaren SP driver Pato O’Ward (5) puts on his hearing protection Friday, May 20, 2022, during Fast Friday practice in preparation for the 106th running of the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Order 2022

The Indy 500 race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Qualifying for the biggest race of the 2022 IndyCar season is set to begin this morning (increased by an hour from 12:00 a.m. ET to 11:00 a.m. ET) at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The entry list for the 106th race of the Indy 500 has 33 drivers each drawn to a four-lap qualifying attempt around a four-turn, 2.5-mile (4.023-kilometer) oval at Speedway, Indiana.

Additional qualifying attempts are allowed with a subsequent priority lane (the previous speed must be skipped) and a regular lane opening.

In a significant change from recent years, the top 12 drivers, not just the top nine, move from today’s qualifying session to the next session tomorrow afternoon.

Instead of just one Fast Nine shootout, there are two Sunday sessions to determine pole position. The first season featured these 12 drivers (the top 12 qualifying), and this season’s top six drivers advance to the Firestone Fast Six, the new battle for pole position.
