Samsonov was recognized as the best goaltender in the 2015 NHL Draft. The Capitals chose him 15th overall. He spent one season with the Hershey Bears and three seasons in the NHL – his first as a backup to Braden Holtby. Comparisons were made to Carrie Price and Andrei Vasilevsky.

Hockey reference

According to forward Lars Aller, Laviolet’s players have faith in their netminders.

“I can tell you this: Everyone on the team has faith in Vitek and Sammy to step up their game and do their best when needed,” Aller said on Thursday (April 21).

“The thing with a playoff series is you don’t really have to play your best in every single game … I know how it feels, but you only need to take four out of seven.”

Contract

The Capitals and Samsonov have agreed a one-year, $2 million contract.

The Washington Capitals have re-signed goalkeeper Ilya Samsonov to a one-year, $2 million contract.

Trade

Samsonov was queuing for Capital’s backup after Vitek Venacek was traded to New Jersey in last week’s draft. The Capitals now have no goalscorers on their NHL roster and will need to find two before next season begins.

Samsonov could still re-sign with the Capitals, but the team would push him to do so at a lower salary. He made $2 million last season. As a restricted free agent with arbitration rights, Samsonov would see his 2022-23 salary in the range of $3 million to $3.5 million, if the Capitals had made a qualifying offer. It was more than what Washington wanted to spend on Samsonov to be backup.
