Federer
Roger Federer might somehow manage to win a record ninth title at Wimbledon at the age of 39, the events of the first week or so had turned many doubters into believers. On a breezy afternoon reality kicked back in as the Swiss was beaten 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-0 by Hubert Hurkacz, a Pole for whom Federer was an inspiration.
Hurkacz, the 14th seed, appearing in his first grand slam quarter-final compared with the 58 of Federer, showed no nerves, no inferiority complex and, as the man who has dominated these courts so many times faded, he ruthlessly finished the job.
Career
Hurkacz played in the main draw at the 2018 French Open and defeated Tennys Sandgren in the first round. This marked his first victory at a Grand Slam and at any ATP main draw event. He lost in the second round to third seed Marin Čilić in four sets.
In August, Hurkacz made his US Open debut. He began in the qualifying and reached his third straight Grand Slam main draw as a qualifier, beating John-Patrick Smith, Egor Gerasimov and Pedro Martinez Portero (all in straight sets) to reach the US Open first round. There, he faced Stefano Travaglia who, like many others, fell victim to the extreme heat and retired. In the second round, Hurkacz lost to 2014 US Open champion Marin Čilić in their second meeting.
Vs bublik
Hubert Hurkacz reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time on Saturday as he overcame Alexander Bublik 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 in 87 minutes at Wimbledon.
The 14th seed has not dropped a set this week at SW19 and hit 33 winners, breaking Bublik four times to advance. He will next face second-seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev or former World No. 3 and Wimbledon 2017 finalist Marin Cilic.
