Home Run Derby 2022: Predictions| Rules| Bracket| TV time for MLB slugfest

History is on the line Monday night at the 2022 MLB Home Run Derby in Los Angeles as New York Mets star Pete Alonso tries to become the first player to win three straight. He may also join Ken Griffey Jr. as the only other player to win three. Seven more of MLB’s top power hitters will try to snap Alonso’s run in the MLB All-Star Showcase, led by top seed Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber. Alonso, who hit an MLB home run derby career record 131 homers in 2019 and 2021, faced rival Atlanta Braves’ Ronald Acuna Jr. in the first round. Schwarber will take on future Hall of Famer Albert Pujols, who has 684 career homers, the fifth-most ever.

Predictions

Pete Alonso: It’s always tempting to stray from the chalk pick, but no one is better built and methodically motivated to win this thing than a two-time winner. Kyle Schwarber would grab a groove and work his way into the final, but overthrowing the stubborn and mighty Alonso would prove too formidable.

It’s really hard to go up against two-time defending derby champion Pete Alonso. But if anyone can match Alonso’s raw power and bat speed, it is Acuna. Dodger Stadium is more suited to right-handers, eliminating Kyle Schwarber, Juan Soto and Corey Seeger. Look for Acuna to upset Alonso in the first round and cruise to victory.

Rules

Round 1 of the Home Run Derby will see eight players compete against each other face-to-face in a bracket style format. Seeding is determined by the sum of home runs in the All-Star break.

Batsmen get three minutes to hit, plus a bonus time of 30 seconds. An additional 30 seconds can be earned if the player hits the homer 475-plus feet in regulation, bringing the total to four minutes.
