Rahman first became known on the world stage in 2001 when he scored a knockout victory against Lennox Lewis to win the Unified Heavyweight Championship. Lewis avenged the loss and regained his championship by defeating Rahman in a rematch later that year. Rahman defeated Monte Barrett to win the WBC title for the second time (initially in the interim edition) in 2005, after which the WBC gave him the absolute champion status by the end of the year. His reign as champion ended in 2006 through another knockout defeat, this time by Oleg Maskaev in a rematch of his first fight in 1999.
