Highlights
The Boston Bruins threw their hat into the contender ring on Saturday by trading for one of the market’s top defenders, Hampes Lindholm of the Anaheim Ducks.
Anaheim received the 2022 first-round picks, 2023 and 2024 the second-round picks, Urho Vakanainen and John Moore. Boston also enjoys Cody Curran. The Duck will retain 50 percent of Lindholm’s average annual value of $5.2 million.
Sportsnet’s Elliot Friedman reported that negotiations between the Ducks and Lindholm did not result in a contract extension, with the team seeking to transfer him before the NHL trade deadline.
Friedman says Boston is working to get Lindholm signed to an extension.
Lindholm, 28, is in the final year of a six-year deal worth $31.5 million and a pending unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. General Manager Pat Verbeek said in early February that he would trade the defenseman before the deadline if the two sides were not able to strike a deal.

Extension
The Boston Bruins have signed defenseman Hemps Lindholm to an eight-year contract extension that will see him hit a cap of $6.5 million annually, a day after acquiring him from the Anaheim Ducks.
On Saturday, the Ducks trade Lindholm to the Boston Bruins in exchange for a 2022 first-round pick, a 2023 second-round pick, a 2024 second-round pick plus defensemen Urho Vakanainen and John Moore. The Ducks will retain 50 percent of Lindholm’s $5,205,556 pay-cap hit.
Lindholm was a pending unrestricted free agent and has 22 points from 61 games this season, while averaging 22:32 ice time per competition.
Lindholm, 28, figures to help the Bruins’ defensive depth and has handled tough minutes against a playoff opponent’s top two lines in five-for-five games in the past. He also averaged 19:45 of the ice time on Strength, which led the Ducks. He would also fit in on penalty kills because he has been part of a group that has been in the top 10 of the NHL throughout the season.
