Interview
Louisville’s Hailey Van Leith celebrated Monday night when her Cardinals beat the Michigan Wolverines 62-50. She also became the first player in the school’s history to record her fourth consecutive 20-point game in the tournament.
With the competition settled and emotions running high, Van Leith spoke with ESPN’s Christie Winters-Scott after the game.
“I just want to win, man,” Van Lith said. “I will do anything to win. At first they were refusing to touch me in the first half. But I was not going to stop because I knew my time was coming.”
The conversation shifted to the Louisville star’s relationship with the late Kobe and Gianna Bryant as Winters-Scott asked Van Lith, “What do you think he would say to you in this moment?” His response was an all-timer.
“He’ll say ‘Go f***ing win this sh*t heli!’ That’s what he’ll say. ‘We didn’t,’ that’s what he’ll say right there.”
The sophomore guard got tired of censoring himself with F-bombs but let the “sh*t” fly over the Disney-owned ESPN airwaves. This wasn’t the first time Van Leith said “sh*t” on Monday night as she was telling her parents after the game, “I’m going to win this sh*t!”
Van Leith’s association with the Bryant family dates back to 2019, when he trained at Bryant’s Mamba Sports Academy in Thousand Oaks, California, developing a friendship with Gigi and mentorship with Kobe in the process.
The Louisville Cardinals will take on fellow No. 1 seed South Carolina in the Final Four on Friday, April 1.

After Gonzaga product Jalen Suggs was selected fifth overall by the Magic in the 2021 NBA Draft, he may soon be celebrating a life-changing moment with girlfriend Hailey van Lith.
It is unclear when the couple came back together, but it appears that they made the relationship public in June. At the time, Van Lith and Suggs shared matching Instagram posts, which featured PDA photos of the pair in Los Angeles.
Suggs replied “hey wife” to Van Leith’s most recent Instagram photo in which she’s sporting Lakers shorts.
Van Lith and Suggs have a shared love for basketball, as he is already a skilled basketball player at the age of 19. Van Leith is an elite guard in Louisville, where she is majoring in business.
As a freshman in 2020–21, Van Lith started in 26 games for the Cardinals and scored 11.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.2 steals per game to help take his team to the Elite Eight. Averaged out.
Jalen suggs
Similar to Jalen, Hailey is a college basketball player striving to become a professional. She is currently the top player of the Louisville Cardinals women’s basketball team.
However, Jalen Suggs is not yet married to Hailey Van Lith.
He only went public about his relationship with Hailey in 2021. He announced his relationship with Leith by posting an Instagram picture titled “Yeah, we’re solid on this end”.
Previously, it was rumored that Suggs is dating Paige Buykers. Turns out, the two are just good friends who grew up playing basketball together.
Moreover, their relationship also put an end to the rumors that Jalen Suggs is apparently gay.
Kobe
Hailey Van Lith scored 22 points on Monday night to help take Louisville ahead of Michigan and into the Women’s Final Four. Now, they will face off against No. 1 overall seed South Carolina in the national semi-finals. After the game, Van Lith was asked what he thought the message from Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant would carry forward in the tournament, and he gave a very amusing answer.
Van Lith said, “He’ll say go f—ing win this s-t heli.” “That’s what he’ll say. We’re not done. He’ll say that right there.”
The question may sound like a random one, but not if you know Van Lith’s background. She trained with Kobe and Gigi Bryant as a high schooler, so she’s definitely qualified to guess what Bryant’s message would be.
“I couldn’t believe he knew exactly who I was and thought I was a good player,” she said of Bryant in 2020. “When I asked him later, ‘Why me?’ He basically said that the way I play, my work ethic and mindset on the court, reminds him of himself, and that made him reach out to me.”
As a high school player, having the support of someone like Bryant would probably do wonders for a player’s confidence, and this has clearly had a hugely positive effect on Van Lith. It is through young players like Van Leith that he was able to influence, directly or indirectly, that Bryant’s legacy will live on.
