Vs Lomachenko

Guillermo Rigondeaux

Vasyl Lomachenko vs. Guillermo Rigondeaux was a professional boxing match between world champions Vasyl Lomachenko and Guillermo Rigondeaux for the WBO super featherweight championship. The bout was held on December 9, 2017 at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Lomachenko and Rigondeaux are regarded as two of the best amateurs in history, with each boxer winning two Olympic gold medals. It was the first time dual gold medal winners fought professionally, and it was a fight the great Roy Jones Jr stated, “To me, on paper, this is the best professional fight that has ever been made.” Lomachenko won by TKO when Rigondeaux retired on his stool after round 6 after claiming to have injured his left hand.

Wife

He left behind his wife Farah Colina, a 7-year-old son and a 17-year-old stepson in Cuba. He was also reportedly staying in the home of countryman and featherweight contender Yuriorkis Gamboa. Rigondeaux won his professional debut on 22 May with a third-round technical knockout (TKO) over Juan Noriega in Miami.

Loss

It turns out Guillermo Rigondeaux’s left hand wasn’t broken after all. The Cuban suffered a hand injury during Round 2 of his Saturday junior lightweight title fight against fellow two-time Olympic gold medalist Vasyl Lomachenko, and said he aggravated the ailment the following round. Rigondeaux believed the hand was broken, and retired on his stool following the sixth round after he was simply outclassed by the better, larger man.

Rigondeaux (17-1, 11 knockouts) was transported to Bellevue Hospital in New York to have his hand examined, but according to Roc Nation Sports’ Dino Duva — Rigo’s promoter — the fighter didn’t have X-rays on his hand that night after experiencing an incredibly long wait time in the emergency room.
