SAN ANTONIO – After more than 26 years on the Spurs bench, Greg Popovich has eclipsed his former boss Don Nelson to become the NBA’s all-time winning head coach.

Popovich, 73, posted regular season win number 1,336 on Friday night as the Spurs beat the Utah Jazz 104-102. Popovich tied Nelson on Monday night when the Spurs beat the Los Angeles Lakers at home.

The Spurs head coach has decided not to discuss the record with his players. He also avoided questions from reporters about the achievement before and after the game.

Popovich’s first regular season win was on December 14, 1996, the Spurs’ victory over the Dallas Mavericks at the Almodome. He has since won five NBA titles, and is a lock for the establishment in the Pro Basketball Hall of Fame.

He has coached almost every Spurs from David Robinson and Sean Elliott to Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili. In the 2018–19 season, the Spurs matched the NBA record for most consecutive playoff appearances with 22.

These are not the same Spurs, but San Antonio improved to 26-40 and followed suit for the Western Conference play-in tournament.

“We mourn the loss of Erin,” Spurs general manager RC Buford said in a team statement. “She was a strong, wonderful, kind, intelligent woman who provided all of us with love, support and humor.”

Popovich had been married for four decades and had two children.

Greg Popovich has coached San Antonio since 1996, leading the Spurs to five NBA titles.

San Antonio is two games behind the Golden State Warriors in their best-of-seven-game first-round playoff series.

LeBron James was asked about Popovich on live television shortly after Cleveland’s 100-97 win over Indiana on Wednesday.

“It’s such a tragedy,” a shaken James said on camera. “My best wishes go out to Pop and his family. That’s devastating news.

“It’s a lot. NBA family, we all live together. I know we compete every night, but when something like this happens it puts everything in perspective.”

Of the active coaches on the list of all-time wins, the closest is Dock River. If Rivers, who is currently 60, decides to continue coaching and Popovich retires in the next season or two, he is in line to overtake the Spurs icon. But he still needs to score 300 wins over Popovich.

The other candidate is Miami Heat’s Eric Spoelstra, who is following a similar path to Popovich. He is a heat lifer who took over in Miami at age 38, 10 years younger than Popovich when he took over at San Antonio.

Now 51, Spoelstra has 651 wins. Popovich had just 163 wins by the end of the age-51 season, but does Spoelstra want to coach for another decade to set the record or does he want to move on? Once he’s coached, maybe there’s a Pat Riley situation waiting for him.
