With the 22nd pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers selected … the linebacker.
And with the 28th pick the Green Bay Packers selected a… defensive tackle.
The NFC heavyweight lost superstar wide receiver DeVante Adams to the Las Vegas Raiders in March, leaving quarterback Aaron Rodgers without his favorite and best offensive weapon.
This left a huge hole on his offense and left Rodgers, who had signed a three-year extension a few days earlier, in a less than ideal position, even though he knew Adams would be pushed.
The Packers made two first-round picks in the draft: No. 22 and No. 28.
Given the void left by Adams in the WR position, many analysts tipped Green Bay to take a receiver with their first pick.
2nd round picks
With the 2021 NFL Draft approaching last night, we decided to fit in one last mock draft fight. Me and fellow Dairyland Express writer Matt Levene both put on our general manager hat and were selected for the Green Bay Packers spot in the first two rounds of the draft.

It’s not the “flashy” or “sexy” many people might expect from the Packers with the 22nd overall pick, but it’s a must. Zion Johnson is one of the most physically imposing specimens in this draft class. Standing at 6 feet 3 inches, weighing 312 pounds, Johnson has built up a starting guard in the NFL. The Packers need depth on the offensive line, and this pick fills that need quickly.
Johnson is a phenomenal run blocker, something that should also tempt the Packers to pick him at 22. The Packers claim arguably the best running back tandem in the NFL. I can almost certainly say that both AJ Dillon and Aaron Jones would jump at the opportunity to have Zion Johnson make the front opening hole for them. The moral of the story is that this pick immediately fills a need, and locks in a potential starting guard for the next decade. Zion Johnson at 22 is the pick.
Draft analysis
Green Bay, Wis. – The 2022 NFL Draft is being held Thursday through Saturday, and every Green Bay Packers draft pick will be analyzed here.
The event is being held on the Las Vegas Strip in the area adjacent to Caesars Forum, two years after it was initially scheduled. The 2020 draft has been turned into a virtual event due to COVID-19.
My Take: As the Packers’ defense improved last season, they still had one obvious weakness: they allowed the third-most yards per rush last season (4.7). Walker could help. It also represents a constant change in philosophy when it comes to defense. For years, the Packers tried to get by with moderately priced free agents on mid-round draft picks and inside linebackers. But last year, they brought in D’Vondre Campbell (and then gave her a five-year, $50 million contract to keep her this off-season) and now they’re A.J. Hawk in 2005. For a good part of last season, the Packers’ other inside linebacker was Chris Barnes, a former undrafted free agent.
Draft Grade
The value of the receiver is skyrocketing. Just look, the big contracts being awarded. Elite receivers are now one step behind quarterbacks in the pecking order, and not necessarily a big step back.
The Green Bay Packers do not agree with that movement. Or maybe he just didn’t find the receiver he liked Thursday night in the NFL draft.
The Packers had two first-round picks after Davante Adams was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders, and a bankable thing in a crazy and unpredictable draft was Green Bay taking a receiver. This is a deep receiver class in an otherwise heavy draft. The Packers have back-to-back MVP quarterback in Aaron Rodgers, whose window to reach the Super Bowl will soon close. After trading Adams, the Packers have little receiver. Sammy Watkins, the big addition, is incredible. Alan Lazard is not a high-end starter. And yet, the Packers didn’t take a receiver in the first round.
