Journalist Grant Wahl, one of the foremost historians of American soccer in more than 20 years and a longtime writer for Sports Illustrated, died Friday night while covering the World Cup in Qatar. He was 48 years old.
Mr Wahl was at the quarter-final match between Argentina and the Netherlands in Lusail, north of Doha, when medics on the scene suffered what he called cardiac arrest. His death was confirmed by the US Soccer Federation in a statement on social media.
Cause of death
Before his passing, the renowned sports journalist said in a recent episode of his podcast, Football with Grant Wahl, that he was suffering from bronchitis while covering the World Cup.
“My body told me, even after the U.S. [team lost], ‘Man, you’re not getting enough sleep.’ It revolted me,” he revealed. He said he had visited a clinic at the World Cup media center twice and was feeling better now.
Although it is possible that bronchitis had something to do with Grant’s demise, no official cause of death has yet been revealed. However, his brother, Eric, believes Grant was targeted for wearing a Gay Pride shirt in Qatar, a country whose strict anti-LGBTQ policies are making headlines during the World Cup.
