The Professional Cricketers’ Association said on Tuesday that former England batsman and assistant coach Graham Thorpe is “seriously ill” in hospital.
Thorpe, 52, accepted the job of Afghanistan’s head coach after leaving the England set-up following a 4-0 Ashes defeat in Australia in December and January.
The PCA issued a statement at the request of Thorpe’s family, which read: “Graham Thorpe has recently become seriously ill and is currently undergoing treatment in hospital.

The England team posted on Twitter: “Our thoughts are with Graham Thorpe and his family. We are with you, Thorpe.”
English county team Surrey described Thorpe as their “favourite son”.
“The thoughts of everyone at the club are with Graham, his wife Amanda and family at this time,” he wrote on Twitter.
“He is an icon of the English game, known by millions of cricket fans and forever the favorite son of Surrey CCC.”
