Press Conference

It is unlikely that former Manchester United defender Bruce will be in charge for much longer.

The Magpies have been linked with former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard, former Borussia Dortmund manager Lucien Favre and Villarreal chief Unai Emery among many others.

However, Bruce made it clear that he would love the opportunity to give Newcastle a poor performance.

“Who wouldn’t want to try? I’m not going to give up hope,” Bruce said at his pre-match press conference on Friday.

“Who wouldn’t want this job to progress now the way it looks in the future?

“Of course I will and I’m sure there are hundreds of people who want to do the same. There are exciting times ahead for the club, that’s for sure.”

‘no discussion’

Bruce said his job situation was not on the agenda during a brief meeting with his new employers.

“There was no discussion on my future, it was all about the team, the injuries and how we are looking for the weekend. It was very informal and I must say they were very good people,” he said.

Bruce said he did not care about the uncertainty about his position following the acquisition.

“It’s not about me personally,” he said. “I have tried to uphold my honor and dignity, which has probably served me well over the last 20-odd years, and it will remain so.

“I played 950 times, won everything to win at the domestic level. It’s all about the club going ahead and getting the results on Sunday.”

Newcastle are only one place from the bottom of the table and without a win in their seven league games this season, a disappointing record that has led many fans to mock Bruce during matches.

In asking Newcastle supporters to support Bruce and his team this weekend, Stavli indicated that a managerial move was still on the agenda.

“If we make any further changes, Steve will be the first to know, but in the meantime, we wish him all the best in his 1,000th match as a manager and coming right behind the team.”
