After winning the 2011 World Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championship, Burns decided to turn his focus to MMA. He made his professional MMA debut in January 2012. In 2012, Burns was selected by UFC fighter Vitor Belfort as the head grappling coach for Team Vitor in the first season of The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil. Burns faced Stephen Thompson at UFC 264 on July 10, 2021. He won the fight by unanimous decision. Burns is scheduled to face Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 273 on April 9, 2022.
When Burns was young, his father offered to fix his client’s car while in business for three months of jiu-jitsu lessons for all his boys. Burns began training at the Accademia Associao Oriente, an affiliate of Nova Uniao, led by Welton Ribeiro. He trained with Nova Uniao until the 2007 World Championships, where he came in second.

Burns made his UFC debut on 26 July 2014 on Fox 12, replacing an injured Viscardi Andrade against promotional newcomer Andreas Stahl. He won the battle by unanimous decision.
On October 25, 2014, Burns faced promotional newcomer Christos Giagos in a lightweight match at UFC 179. He won the match via submission in the first round. Gilbert Burns walked on earth on 20 July 1986 at Niteroi in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Burns is the second of three children born of a marriage between his father, Herbert Sr., and Tania, his mother.
Although he is a Brazilian citizen, Gilbert’s family heritage is of Portuguese and African descent; Burns’ father, Herbert Sr., had a garage in Rio.
