Gilbert Burns began his fighting sporting journey at the age of 12 when he began learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Burns won 2 medals at the IBJJF World Championship which led to him being promoted to a black belt. He continued his impressive career by winning silver at the 2009 edition of the IBJJF World Championships Burns later ventured outside the US and reached the semi-finals at the European Open followed by a Brazilian national victory in 2010.

2010 was a successful year for Burns as he won the World Professional Jiu-Jitsu-Cup and the World No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu Championship. He then eventually won the IBJJF World Championship in 2011. Gilbert went on a hiatus in 2012 and returned in 2013 to win the NoGi World Championship.

This is the UFC 273 live blog for Khamzat Chimaev vs Gilbert Burns, the featured welterweight fight on Saturday at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla.

Chimaev is one of the most hyped prospects to enter the UFC, arguably ever. The 27-year-old Phenom leads 10-0 in his professional career, with all of his wins coming through stoppages. Chimaev has been a complete domination since arriving in the UFC in 2020, scoring four wins while maintaining just one crucial strike. His outstanding performances have led many to consider him the champion of the future, and with a win over Burns, he could have a chance at the next title.

Burns is the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Champion and is currently the No. 4 ranked welterweight in the MMA Fighting Global Rankings. After spending most of his career at the lightweight, Burns rose to 170 pounds in 2019, where he posted a 5-1 record, with his only loss being to defending champion Kamaru Usman. A win over the much-hyped Chimaev would go a long way toward getting Burns back in for another title shot.
