The death of NFL quarterback Dwayne Haskins has left many mourning … and some have issued comments that are earning blows.

Some of those include 90-year-old veteran Gil Brandt, who retired from his Hall of Fame career as a Dallas Cowboy Scout but still works for the league and on SiriusXM’s NFL radio show, and issued such comments. To which many on social media have reacted with outrage.

Haskins, a month before his 25th birthday, tragically died Saturday morning when he was hit by a car while training in South Florida for his upcoming season as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers. (Read the Haskins obituary here.) When the topic was discussed on Brandt’s radio show, Brandt issued a long series of insensitive comments about Haskins.

Maybe if he stayed in school for a year he wouldn’t do silly things… [like] take a walk on a highway,’ Brandt said.

The comments drew widespread condemnation on social media.

Charles Omenihu tweeted, ‘You are wild @Gil_Brandt disrespect all this.

‘I don’t know or believe but please don’t speak on my friend. He will be missed and your words are embarrassing. We’re all hurting right now,’ Cam Hayward tweeted.

‘Remove Gil Brandt from the Hall of Fame. This is unforgivable,’ tweeted Darron Lee, former Ohio State linebacker and Superbowl champion.

‘Where’s the sympathy for Dwayne and his family?’ Heisman Winner and NFL Rookie of the Year Robert Griffin III.

Matt Miller tweeted, ‘Gil Brandt is 90, I’m not sure he understands what he says half the time.

Gil Brandt’s comments about Dwayne Haskins were disgusting and should never be allowed to be on an NFL radio station again. Yes, I know he’s 90, but that doesn’t give him a pass on this matter,’ said Antwan Staley.

Who is

A Milwaukee native, he attended North Division High School, where he was a 150-pound starting defensive tackle. He also wrote letters in basketball and track.

He enrolled at the University of Wisconsin, but left after two years.

Brandt worked as a photographer specializing in newborns and based on a recommendation from Elroy Hirsch as a part-time scout for the Los Angeles Rams. In 1958, he was hired by the San Francisco 49ers as a full-time scout.

He served as the Dallas Cowboys’ chief talent scout since the club’s founding in 1960. He served as a part-time scout for the Los Angeles Rams in the 1950s under general manager Tex Schramm. When Schramm took over the newly formed Dallas franchise in 1960, Brandt was one of the first people he hired. Schramm, Brandt and coach Tom Landry formed the trilogy that directed the Cowboys for their first 29 years.
