Gerald Williams was drafted by the Yankees in 1987 and made his major league debut with the club in 1992. He was known for his speed and defensive prowess in the outfield and was nicknamed “Ice”. He was traded to the Brewers by the Yankees at the end of the 1996 season, so he did not play on the team that won the Yankees World Series that year. He also played for the Braves, Rays, Marlins and Mets and had a second stint with the Yankees from 2001–2002. He hit .255 and scored 85 home runs during his 14-season MLB career.

Gerald Floyd Williams was born on August 10, 1966, in New Orleans, one of 14 children in his family. He grew up in Laplace, just outside New Orleans, and was raised by his mother. Years later, when he was in the majors, he would return home and talk to the kids in his neighborhood who didn’t see the future and were turning to crime and drugs. He knew what they were doing, because he had grown up under the same circumstances. “You try to teach kids to be above circumstances. But they hear a lot of different speeches,” he said in a 1995 interview. “I mean, sometimes our thoughts as adults We are respectful, but we do not listen. A lot of kids want someone to listen to them. Just to be someone’s friend.” So Williams would go to his high school games, or he would talk to them or their parents on the phone if needed.
