George William Russell (born 15 February 1998) is a British racing driver who currently competes in Formula One contracted to Williams.[2] He was the 2018 FIA Formula 2 Champion and 2017 GP3 Series champion for ART. Following his Formula 2 championship win, Russell signed for Williams in 2019, making his debut at the 2019 Australian Grand Prix alongside Robert Kubica. Russell has been contracted to drive for Williams until the conclusion of the 2021 season, although he stood in for Lewis Hamilton at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix at Mercedes. Russell achieved his first F1 podium with Williams at the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix. He is also part of the Mercedes Young Drivers programme.[3] He is due to join Mercedes full-time in the 2022 season.

George Russell will join Mercedes as Lewis Hamilton’s next teammate, the world champions confirmed in their all-British 2022 driver line-up.
He replaces Valtteri Bottas, who is moving to Alfa Romeo after five seasons with Mercedes. Bottas, who joined Mercedes in 2017, has recorded nine race wins, 54 podiums and 17 pole positions. He has been instrumental in winning four Constructors’ World Championships at Mercedes since 2017.
Russell, 23, joined the Mercedes Young Drivers program in 2017. Russell won that season’s GP3 Series championship and became FIA Formula 2 champion the following year before graduating to Formula One with Williams in 2019.

Russell, 23, is enjoying his most fruitful season to date in Formula 1, having made his F1 debut with Williams in 2019. The Briton took his first podium in Belgium last month while earning the nickname ‘Mr’. Saturday’ due to his consistently impressive qualifying performances – including P2 at Spa-Francorchamps.
“It’s a special day for me personally and professionally, but also a day of mixed feelings,” Russell said. “I am excited and humbled to join Mercedes next year, which is a huge career move, but it also means that I will say goodbye to my teammates and friends at Williams.
