Eugene Cyril “Geno” Smith III[1] (born October 10, 1990) is an American football quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football in West Virginia, led the Mountaineers to several bowl games, broke several passing records, and received several awards before being drafted by the New York Jets in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. After two inconsistent seasons as the Jets’ starting quarterback, Smith eventually lost his starting position due to injuries in his final two years with the team. He has also spent time as a backup for the New York Giants and Los Angeles Chargers.

Smith saw some action in his freshman year as a backup for senior Jarrett Brown. His first snap in a regular season game came against Auburn; He completed 5 of 8 passes for 50 yards and one interception. He would see action again against Florida State at Syracuse, Marshall, Louisville, and the Gator Bowl.  In his freshman year at West Virginia University, Smith completed 32 of 49 passes for 309 yards, one touchdown. and threw an interception, and started quarterback Brown rushed for 7 yards on 17 attempts as a backup. He finished his new season with a quarterback rating of 81.

Smith was born on October 10, 1990, in Lakemont, Georgia, to Eugene Smith Jr. and Tracy Seller.[2] His great-grandfather, Danny Smith, was a record-breaking All-American hurdler at Florida State, and his cousin, Melvin Bratton, in the 1980s. Was a star in Miami in the middle of the decade. His surname, Geno, came from his grandfather, who was nicknamed “Big Geno”. [3]

Smith was admitted to Norland Middle School’s magnet program, which devoted two hours a day to art education.[4] He attended Miramar High School, where he was coached by former mountaineer Damon Cogdale. [5] As a junior, he passed for 2,200 yards, 25 touchdowns and three interceptions, and was named a second-team All-State quarterback. He was also named to the Second Team All-Broward County as an athlete for 2007. After his junior year he was invited to the prestigious Elite 11 quarterback camp in Aliso Viejo, California

Smith completed 12 of 22 pass attempts for 167 yards and a touchdown in Monday’s 13-10 loss to the Saints.

Smith got off to a great start when he held a perfect deep ball to hit DK Metcalf in the first quarter in stride for an 84-yard touchdown, but it largely ended his effectiveness. The veteran backup defended the football and kept Seattle in the contest until his final drive, but was promptly dismissed twice (five times in total), eliminating any chance of a heroic comeback. Smith has a friendly matchup against Jacksonville on tap for week 8, but his lack of upsides makes him a tough sell.

Smith completed 23 of 32 pass attempts for 209 yards and a touchdown in a 23-20 overtime loss to the Steelers on Sunday.

Smith made his debut with Seattle in place of the injured Russell Wilson (finger), and the results were mixed. The 31-year-old fought hard in the first half, failing to take the Seahawks any point before halftime. The veteran got things going in the second half to bring his team back into a tie at the end of regulation, but it was his lost fumble that led to Chris Boswell scoring the game-deciding field goal. Overall, the passing offense took an expected dip under Smith, and there doesn’t seem to be enough upside to make him a viable fantasy starter against the Saints next week.
