After losing to Dmitry Bivole earlier this month, Canelo lvarez has announced that he will be seeking a rematch with Gennady Golovkin after a trilogy fight.
On Monday, Alvarez confirmed that his trilogy match with Golovkin would be his next fight, and that he would return to the super-middleweight category for that match, according to TalkSport Boxing editor Michael Benson. In this fight he will defend his world titles from the World Boxing Association, the World Boxing Council, the International Boxing Federation and the World Boxing Organization.
After that, he would aim for a rematch with Bivol, who defeated the Mexican boxer by unanimous decision. The only second time he lost, which was also by decision, was against Floyd Mayweather in September 2013.
Loss
It was supposed to be Gennady Golovkin’s shot at redemption. The longtime unified middleweight champion was eyeing a rematch against Canelo Alvarez after a draw in the first matchup and a loss in the second.
Instead, “GGG” will face Sergei Derevyanchenko, a fighter he was supposed to fight in 2018. After not making a deal with IBF Essentials, Golovkin was stripped of his IBF title.
The two will have a chance to fight each other on Saturday, 5 October for the belt that was vacated after Alvarez failed to come to an agreement with Derevyanchenko, again IBF mandated.
