Raptors F Gary Trent Jr. is participating in a light practice Friday and will be in doubt for Saturday’s game against Indiana, according to Eric Korin of The Athletic.

Things are going in the right direction for Gary Trent Jr as he was able to attend practice again on Friday. However, he was able to practice on Wednesday before not playing on Thursday. The 23-year-old has not played since Sunday as he is battling high blood pressure of the left big toe. If Trent Jr. cannot play on Saturday, Yuta Watanabe should again look to increase minutes against the fast bowlers.

Gary Trent Jr. has been instrumental in Toronto’s success this season, but the sharpshooting guard has been sidelined for two straight games with a left big toe. The Raptors split those games, defeating the Cavaliers but losing to the Bulls.

The Raptors were back in action on Saturday when they clashed with the Pacers. Will Trent play.

Trent was initially listed as a suspect, but has since been evicted.

The day before, Raptors head coach Nick Nurse said that Trent took part in a light exercise. He said that Trent would be suspicious against the pacers.

Trent has appeared in 62 of Toronto’s 73 games this season, averaging a career-best 18.0 points on .407/.376/.836 shooting splits. Precious Achiuwa started in his place against the Bulls, while Ozzy Anunobi returned to the starting lineup against the Cavaliers.

Raptors coach Nick Nurse said Ozzy Anunobi returned to practice and is “getting closer”. It’s not clear what exactly that means, but he shouldn’t be too far off.

The plan, Nurse said, is to ramp up Annobi before the playoffs. He doesn’t want to throw the 24-year-old into the big minutes just before the playoffs, because he hasn’t played past the All-Star break.

“I think he will need more than a couple (games),” said the nurse. “Hopefully he can get into five of them or a few.”

However, Annobi is not expected to play in Thursday’s game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Gary Trent Jr. did not take part in practice on Wednesday, but two sets of X-rays came back negative.

“The news turned out to be better than we imagined,” the nurse said.

Precious Achiuwa explains how Toronto’s trust has helped her become a credible three-point threat. Raptors shocked by Scotiabank Arena Fire.

Injury

Few guarantees have been given during this unpredictable Raptors season, but one thing that seems to be certain is that they will need a healthy Fred VanVallet and Ozzy Annobi to score a run. Another safe bet is that Gary Trent Jr. has to be on top of his game.

Trent has become one of the most prolific shooters in the NBA. When he’s on, the 23-year-old is just what the Raptors need. He provides spacing with light-out shooting from outside the arc and, when the opposition overplays, he has the ability to make his shot by carving through the defense to get a short open look.

Then there are the moments when he disappears completely off the floor, or his shots miss the mark with full foot, and the Raptors’ lack of options becomes clear. Without the VanVleet and Anunoby to share the load with the outdoors, the shooting fallout makes it even harder to ignore.

Trent went on a tear in the weeks leading up to the All-Star break. During the 12-game stretch, the Duke University product averaged 25 points on 46 percent shooting from the floor, including 45.6 percent from the deep. He scored at least 15 points in all but two of those games and was held for singles only once.
