This is the big one. Ursella has been the Yankees’ starting third baseman for most of the last three seasons while recovering. Sanchez looked like a future superstar as a rookie in 2016 and an All-Star in 2017, then in 2019, but didn’t turn the monster many thought he would be up to the plate.

The biggest name here is Donaldson’s. The three-time All-Star won the 2015 AL MVP and took two other top-five spots in MVP voting. He hit .247/.352/.475 (127 ops) in 135 games for the Twins last season with 26 doubles, 26 homers, 72 RBIs, 73 runs and 3.2 wars. He has been hit somewhat by injuries over the years and will never hit for a high average again, but he is still a middle-order power hitter. He could have hit between Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton or immediately after both.

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, Donaldson is still owed $50 million by 2023 and the Yankees are taking it all.

Earlier in the day, Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced Ursella as the Yankees’ starting shortstop. Ursella, whose natural position is third base, had started only 41 games at shortstop in six major league seasons with Cleveland (2015, 2017), Toronto (2018) and the Yankees (2019-21).

Nonetheless, Boone indicated that he still expected the Yankees to make some extra moves.

“I’m sure there are still things to be done in the game, and certainly with us, that’s going to potentially change that scenario,” Boone said on Sunday morning. “I know that Cash [GM Brian Cashman] and the front office are overdrive and evaluating and evaluating those conversations right now, whether it’s free agents, through trade markets. I know they’re going to find a place like that. Working where it potentially improves our club.”

Contract

After discussions over his future, catcher Gary Sanchez has been given a contract and will play for the Yankees until 2022. The deal is believed to be worth around $8 million.

Sanchez has been in the news for the Yankees in the last two off-seasons, but the 29-year-old has been rewarded for the 2021 season in what general manager Brian Cashman called “much better than last season”.

Cashman acknowledged that the Yankees would consider an upgrade to the position, but a small free-agent field saw him return to Sanchez for at least one more year.

Sanchez shared his catching duties with Kyle Higashioka last season, but managed to bat .204/.307/.423 in 117 games with 23 home runs and 54 RBIs.
