Fred Brown, former head women’s basketball coach at Merritt College, said that she had a memorable 1985–87 game as well as a great basketball IQ and top grades. The two-time All-Golden Gate Conference athlete still holds the school record for most steals in a sport, with 15 players during her sophomore year. The 5-foot-7 guard still ranks third in school history in steals (291) and ninth in assists (182). The former team captain also played a major role in Merritt winning the Golden Gate Conference Championship in both his seasons, including a 26–4 record as a sophomore.
Brown said that perhaps the greatest achievement displaying his athleticism was James’ vertical jump which once measured about 30 inches. She did not continue playing college basketball as she started a family with Peyton Sr. and married him in 1997.
“His athleticism was quickness and jumping ability,” said Brown, an assistant at Merritt. “I don’t know where she got it. She probably got it from her mother too. She was an active athlete. Monique was one of my favorites. I coached a lot of athletes, but she was excellent.”

Vertical
His athleticism has made him a high-impact player, flying to success with the Golden State Warriors.
However, Peyton is much more than a human highlight reel. He has been brilliant on the defensive end, constantly putting pressure on the ball handlers. He has the same fast hands as his father and his motor allows him to harass opponents the entire time he is on the floor.
His energy isn’t limited to the defensive end. While Peyton’s slam dunk plays caught everyone’s attention, his willingness to go into full possession without the ball is something that has made him a valuable asset to the offense.
GP2 never stops moving. He has great experience in knowing when to cut and where to cut. Even if he doesn’t get a pass every time, just hitting the hoop gets the defense in motion – this is where warriors are able to capitalize on their opponent’s mistakes.
Payton averages 7.3 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.4 steals in 14.3 minutes of play per game since cracking the official rotation. He has been an underdog throughout his career and is on his way to success this season.
