Mom & Dad

We all know Gary Peyton. The Glove was one of the best point guards of all time and a character throughout his long NBA career. But, as we all know, young men are naturally “mom’s boys”.

So I decided to talk to Gary Peyton II’s mother about the start of his professional career. Over the years, Monique Peyton has started a foundation, a non-profit, all while raising a beautiful family. She currently works for Saks Fifth Avenue. So, if you want to give a special gift to your special lady this Christmas, click here.

She filled me in on GP2 as a kid, how she views the sport as a fan, and what career choices she would have pursued if she hadn’t been a great basketball player for our RGV Vipers.

The Dream Shack: Gary II has had a stellar start to his professional career, including a 51-point game and being awarded the NBA D-League Performer of the Week. How proud are you of your son’s early success?

Monique Peyton: I’m so proud of GP2! He has come a long way. His journey has been long and difficult, but he has been determined. He is a hard worker, and has shown in and off the court.

Gary Peyton II didn’t make his name heard in the 2016 NBA Draft, but it looks like things are going relatively well for the Oregon State product.
He landed with the Houston Rockets and signed a three-year deal with them over the summer. And despite playing a limited number of minutes through two preseason games, his efforts to make the final roster attracted Peyton fans already

Salary

It’s no secret that the Golden State Warriors are shelling out massive amounts of money this year as they hit the NBA’s recap tax for the first time with essentially four maximum contracts on the books. Per Sporttrack they will pay an NBA record $346.2m in salary and luxury tax savings this season.

Luxury Tax Saving Vs 15th Man
For this reason there was a real question mark over whether the Warriors would use their 15th roster spot. As they already exceeded the luxury tax threshold in the $35m-$40m bracket, each dollar is multiplied by 6.25. At a minimum wage of $1,669,178 they spend over $10.4m in taxes, and over $12.1m once salary is included.

At the end of the preseason he waived all players competing for that 15th place, including Avery Bradley, a bold move for a team desperately in need of some backcourt defense and experienced know-how.

But that wasn’t the end of the story. Gary Peyton II was signed to the first partially guaranteed contract at the end of last season. By forgiving him and then re-signing him to a new veteran minimum contract, the Warriors ended up with their 15th man, and a small savings of $1.7m in luxury tax, against Peyton’s contract signed last season and That’s thanks in part to the difference between the Veteran’s Minimum which actually counts against the salary cap.

Payton is worth the cost
Still, $10.4m in taxes, and $12.1m overall, is a hefty price to pay for the 15th person on the roster. But last night, in Sacramento, Peyton proved why he was worth the price for the Warriors. With Iguodala resting, the Warriors needed a defensive guard to fight off Sacramento’s impressive youth backcourt. Patton II responded to the challenge, proving “thousand percent” that the Warriors were right to spend that extra cash, according to Stephen Curry.

There was never any question about the defense with Peyton, and he was on full display. Payton has always had a question mark, what can it give you if you commit a crime?

Interestingly, the Warriors have used Patton more like a slashing wing than a guard, making use of his athleticism and timing from the ball. They can get away with it thanks to their reverse offense with playmaking forwards like Drummond Green, Otto Porter Jr., and Nemanja Bezelica.

But three-point shooting is what will make or break Payton’s career. It’s tough to survive in the NBA, especially as a perimeter player, with a career average of 26.7%. The Warriors version of Peyton, however, has met with some degree of success. Kings had 10 points in 17 minutes against Peyton, including two big three point shots in the fourth quarter. This extends from 10 games with Golden State last season where Peyton shot 50% beyond the arc, and an impressive Summer League performance.
