Ghulam Mohammad Baksh – later known as Gama Pehalwan or “The Great Gama” – was born on May 22, 1878 in the village of Jabbowal in Punjab province, which was then known as British India. Gama had a tumultuous childhood, moving on after the death of his father and then living with his uncle, a wrestler, when his grandfather passed away.
Gaining intense exercise and interest in wrestling from a very early age, Gama Pehelwan entered a strong competition at the age of 10, claiming the top spot among over 400 competitors. From here his interest in training and wrestling grew. By some accounts, Gama’s training at one time included 5,000 squats and 3,000 pushups per day.
From 1890 to 1910, Gama Pehalwan continued a series of undefeated matches against India’s greatest wrestlers, only his match against the national champion ended in a draw. Gama then developed his career at international level by challenging and defeating Britain’s greatest wrestlers, resulting in a match against world champion Stanislaus Zbyszko, which also ended in a draw.
Continuing his training, Gama Pehalwan eventually defeated these two opponents in a rematch to earn himself the title of Champion of India and World Champion. His career spanned several decades and more than five thousand matches, which went undefeated.

Ghulam Mohammad Baksh was born on May 22, 1878 in Jabbowal village, Amritsar district, Punjab province, British India (now Jabbowal, Kapurthala district, Punjab, India) into a Kashmiri Muslim family of wrestlers.
He was first seen at the age of ten, in 1888, when he entered a strongman competition held in Jodhpur, which included several difficult exercises such as the squat. More than four hundred wrestlers took part in the competition and Gama was among the last fifteen and was named the winner by the Maharaja of Jodhpur because of his young age. Gama was later trained by the Maharaja of Datia.
Death
According to several accounts, he was suffering from a chronic illness and was having difficulty paying for the medical he needed in the days before his death. His condition is said to have worsened and he was earlier suffering from asthma and cardiac problems. He had to sell his medals in the eleventh hour due to difficult financial conditions.
