Fires agent
On Friday, Freddie Freeman was in tears on his first visit to Atlanta as a guest player. On Tuesday, he reportedly fired agents who oversaw his offseason departure from the Braves to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
ESPN’s Buster Olney reports that the first baseman broke ties with Accel Sports Management, which failed to reach a deal with the Braves before Freeman signed him as a free agent with the Dodgers. According to Olney, Freeman “is annoyed with how his free-agent talks went.”
Following the report, Freeman described his representation as a “fluid” situation in a statement to MLB.com’s Mark Bowman.
“Last weekend in Atlanta was a very emotional time for me and my family,” Freeman’s statement read. “I’m working through some issues with my long-time agents at Excel. My representation remains a fluid position, and I’ll update if necessary.”
Bowman confirmed that Freeman has filed paperwork to terminate his relationship with Accel Sports, while the agency has been formally terminated.
Why did fire his agent
We’re two-plus months into the 2022 MLB season, and Freddie Freeman’s move to the Los Angeles Dodgers is one of the stranger and more awkward stories in baseball. On Tuesday it took another turn.
According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, Freeman fired his agents at Accel Sports Management and is now listed as representing himself.
Freeman returned to Atlanta this past weekend for the first time as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers. He received his World Series ring, had his share of emotional, tearful scenes and even took an unintentional elbow from his replacement, Matt Olsen.
But the circumstances that led to Freeman leaving the Braves – their home for 12 seasons – remained a source of frustration for Freeman. During negotiations, in which the Braves offered Freeman $135 million over five years, Freeman’s representation reportedly contacted Braves GM Alex Anthopoulos to give him an ultimatum and deadline after the lockout.
Realizing that no deal was coming through, the Braves decided to trade for Olsson. Freeman signed with the Dodgers for six years, $162 million – $57 million of which is deferred.
Contract status
Freeman’s total contract is worth $162 million, although $57 million of this is deferred over 13 years until 2040. Greg Beacham at The Associated Press has all the details:
Freeman will make $27 million a year with Los Angeles, but $7 million in each of the first three seasons and $12 million in each of the last three has been postponed, for a total of $57 million. The money is payable in installments of $4 million each July 1 from 2028-35 and $5 million each July 1 from 2036-40.
