When is coming back

Raptors guard Fred VanVleet told reporters he would not play in Game 5 against the 76ers on Monday after a left hip strain in Game 4.

With only five minutes remaining in the first half of Saturday’s 110–102 win over Philadelphia, VanVleet left the game and did not return after suffering an injury. The point guard thought it was serious as he ripped his jersey in half as he left the court and went back to the locker room.

The Toronto Raptors will be without All-Star point guard Fred VanVleet for Game 5 of their first-round series against the Philadelphia 76ers — and possibly for longer — with a left hip flexor strain.

“You can hold your breath,” VanValet said with a smile after slamming himself into a courtside seat at the Wells Fargo Center before the Toronto shootaround on Monday morning. “I’m out tonight. I was able to get an MRI… Nothing major, but definitely just a hip flexor showing strain.

“So I’ll come out tonight, take it day in and day out and go from there.”

Asked if he would be able to return in Game 6, VanValet, who said the injury occurred when he made a defensive slide in the first quarter of Game 4, seemed pessimistic, saying instead that he wanted to come back. Will feel about “very good”. The start of a possible Eastern Conference semifinal series.

The only problem with this? Toronto enters the series 3–1 down in Game 5, and goes 3–0 down before winning Game 4 – no team in NBA history has overcome this shortcoming.

“I don’t know. I really don’t know,” VanValet said of his likely position for Game 6. “I’m always going to leave that window open. You know, it’s not one of those things where I’m out for four weeks. Maybe it will take some time. Hopefully we can move this thing forward and I would feel great about playing in the next round.

“I know nobody believes that we can [win this series] but I think we can. So I feel good about it. But I’m going to stay positive and be as much as I can.” I can do as much rehab and recover as I can and take one day at a time.”

Here’s what we all know about VanWleet’s apparent injury.

What is Fred VanVleet’s injury?
According to the Raptors, VanVleet was out of the game with a left hip strain and didn’t return in Game 4. Before Monday’s Game 5, the team listed VanVleet as a suspect with a left hip flexor strain.

In Game 4, the injury apparently occurred on the defense as VanValet went gingerly before not returning to the offense after the Raptors stopped.
