Game 5
The Toronto Raptors will be without All-Star point guard Fred VanVleet for Game 5 of their first-round series against the Philadelphia 76ers — and possibly for longer — with a left hip flexor strain.
“You can hold your breath,” VanValet said with a smile after slamming himself into a courtside seat at the Wells Fargo Center before the Toronto shootaround on Monday morning. “I’m out tonight. I was able to get an MRI… Nothing major, but definitely just a hip flexor showing strain.
“So I’ll come out tonight, take it day in and day out and go from there.”
Asked if he would be able to return in Game 6, VanValet, who said the injury occurred when he made a defensive slide in the first quarter of Game 4, seemed pessimistic, saying instead that he wanted to come back. Will feel about “very good”. The start of a possible Eastern Conference semifinal series.
The only problem with this? Toronto enters the series 3–1 down in Game 5, and goes 3–0 down before winning Game 4 – no team in NBA history has overcome this shortcoming.
Game 6
Three of those five 3s, with all three free throws, came in the fourth quarter after being fouled in a 3-point effort by Shawn Livingston. Both the first two shots came with just two seconds on the clock. The first was a relatively clean pull-up from the left wing that tied the game for 91 with only nine minutes left. The second was contested 3 (again from the left wing) over Stephen Curry who put the Raptors up with a little over seven minutes left.
The last of VanVleet’s 22 points came on the shot that gave the Raptors the lead for good. In less than four minutes, he got a high screen from Siakam. And when Warriors defenders – Quinn Cooke and Drummond Greene – each went to the rim with a roll of Siakam, VanVleet calmly stepped back in 3 from the top of the arc.
Kawhi Leonard was named the finals MVP. But the Raptors wouldn’t have won this championship, if not for a remarkable change from Fred VanVleet. The biggest shots in Game 6, along with a few other huge buckets in the previous nine games, came from the shortest man on the floor.
Is playing tonight
A season of battling bumps and bruises, and aches and pains, has again caught on with Fred VanVleet, who knocked the Raptors leader out of the most important game of the year.
A left hip flexor strain suffered in the first half of Saturday’s Game 4 would sideline VanVleet for tonight’s Game 5 in his first-round playoff series with the Philadelphia 76ers.
“Nothing big, thank goodness,” VanValet said Monday morning, before the Raptors went through a game-day shootaround at the Wells Fargo Center.

“Definitely showing a hip flexor strain. I’ll come out tonight, take it day in and day out and go from there.
If the Raptors can extend the series to Game 6 on Thursday, it’s unlikely that VanVleet will be back.
“I’m always going to leave that window open, it’s not one of those things where I’m out for four weeks,” he said. “Maybe it will take some time. Hopefully we can push it forward and I feel great about playing in the next round.”
VanVleet was injured while making a defensive move in the first quarter of Saturday’s win. He tried to recover from the injury by undergoing heat treatment between the first and second trimesters but it was clear that his movements were limited.
