Wife
As Reyes explained, his wife, Marion Melendez, is a native of Puerto Rico, whose mother is from Palenque, her hometown in the Dominican Republic. Marion and her mother moved to Cleveland in 2015 to catch the Lake County Captains game, facing the Indians’ Class-A ally Fort Wayne Tincaps, who then featured the 19-year-old power hitter still three years away. Making his Major League debut.
“She went to one of my games,” Reyes said. “That’s what I met him.”
A year later, the couple married and Reyes’ baseball journey would take him from Fort Wayne to Lake Elsinore (California), San Antonio, El Paso, and eventually San Diego, where he made his big league debut in 2018.
Yet despite being currently in the middle of a breakout season in which he has scored 27 home runs through 99 games, the Padres have still opted to trade the 24-year-old Indians as part of a three-team deal. Including the Cincinnati Reds just ahead of Wednesday’s trading deadline.

Fantasy
Franmil Reyes nominated for assignment by parents
Franmil Reyes was named to the assignment by the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday.
Reyes was selected to Triple-A on Tuesday. He scored nine home runs this season with the Guardians scoring just .213. Reyes had a 37.1 percent strike rate on 280 plate appearances. Reyes could make a fresh start with a new team, but it’s hard to imagine that he’ll provide much hypothetical value in 2022.
Trade
If the Guardians traded Franmil Reyes, it would make the lineup more versatile. For example, they can transfer Josh Naylor to the primary designated hitter and play Owen Miller full-time at first base. This will open up to second base or shortstop (where you want to play Andres Jiménez) for one of the Guardians’ young prospects in Tyler Freeman or Gabriel Arias.
If neither of those prospects are ready to be surfaced full-time, Tito could at least move Amade Rosario back into the field. This will likely open up a spot in the outfield for Richie Palacios to be recalled and have more play time.
Contract
Reyes belted 37 homers in 2019 – splitting the season between Cleveland and San Diego – and had 30 homers and a career-high 85 RBIs in 2021. He is earning $4.55 million on a one-year contract and was arbitration-eligible.
Manager Terry Francona said, “Franmill wasn’t getting the fastball, and the breaking balls he hit were going for singles.” “There weren’t many home runs. It was tough. It was tough.
“We want to see our young players play, and that gives someone a chance to claim that.”
The guardian has seven days to trade, release or outright remit the minor if he approves the waiver. Reyes has time of service for refusing the assignment outright by Cleveland.
